85 City Traineeships to start in July

30 City firms offer London school leavers paid work experience

Today the City of London Corporation confirmed that 30 City-based firms will, this summer, open their doors to offer six -13 week paid traineeships to 85 bright London school-leavers.

The City of London Business Traineeship (CBT) scheme gives talented young people a head-start on the ever-competitive career ladder, and allows City firms the chance to tap into the local pool of talent, forging lasting relationships with high-achievers before university.

Around 300 A-Level leavers from the seven City-fringe boroughs have been competing for one of the 85 places with the 30 confirmed host businesses since January this year, and the paid traineeships will start in July.

The City firms opening their doors to the young local talent include Bloomberg financial news network, Antares Insurance, Allen & Overy, and the Bank of England.

Stuart Fraser, Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee at the City of London Corporation, says, “With competition for graduate jobs remaining tough, CBT traineeships are crucial in giving young people some concrete experience for their CV. This year, we will be giving this opportunity to the 600th trainee. As a result, we now have young ambassadors for jobs in the Square Mile, right on the City’s doorstep and a high-achieving workforce of the future.”

Participants are drawn from Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Southwark, Westminster, Lambeth, Camden and Islington. They secure their placements by successfully completing an assessment, workshop and interview process with their host firm.

Part of a series of initiatives, which bridge the gap between the City and City-fringes, the City Business Traineeship scheme is funded by the City of London Corporation and delivered by the Brokerage Citylink. Trainees are paid the standard rate for a graduate role and secure work placements of up to three months with City firms in the Finance, Banking, Legal and Insurance sectors in the City.
