London’s young journalists attend prestigious awards at Mansion House

The Lord Mayor of the City of London has invited five London young people with a passion for journalism to attend the prestigious Wincott Awards lunch, held today at Mansion House.

Now in their 40th year, the presentation of the Wincott awards represents one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the journalistic calendar attended by senior journalists (including Lionel Barber – editor of the Financial Times and Robert Peston – the BBC’s Business Editor) and leading figures from business and the City. The guest speaker will be Paul Volcker, chairman of President Obama's Economic Advisory Board.

Five students from the Young Journalists’ Academy (YJA) – an institution for London state school students trying to break into journalism - attended the lunch and were given the opportunity to question key industry figures and to get a real insight into the world of journalism.

Lord Mayor of the City of London, Nick Anstee who hosted the awards says, “It is imperative that we recognise our journalistic talent, not just amongst those at the top of their profession but also amongst those who are just starting out.

Allowing promising youngsters access to these prestigious awards for the first time will, I hope, highlight the challenges and rewards associated with working in an industry which is notoriously difficult to break into.”

The Wincott awards reward outstanding acheivement in economic and financial journalism; in print, broadcast and online media. Past winners include:

  • Dan Roberts – Business Editor of the Guardian, previously City Editor of the Sunday Telegraph
  • Robert Peston – BBC Business Editor, previously Assistant Editor of the Sunday Telegraph
  • Evan Davis – Broadcast journalist, presenting BBC Dragon’s Den and programmes for BBC Radio 4
  • Adrian Chiles – Broadcast journalist, previously Presenter of BBC Working Lunch
