City of London strengthens financial ties with USA

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman Nick Anstee, heads to the USA this week to strengthen business and economic links across the Atlantic.

His team arrives in Miami today (Thursday, 21 January 2010), before travelling to Tampa, Charlotte, Houston and Dallas. The Lord Mayor will meet political and business leaders to forge closer links on issues including: carbon finance, Sharia-compliant finance, and Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

The Lord Mayor, who is global ambassador for all UK-based financial services, said:

"This economic crisis has highlighted the fact that in financial services the US and UK are more closely intertwined than ever before. Growing the trans-Atlantic exchange of talent, funding and ideas will play a crucial role in making sure both our countries achieve a sustained recovery.

"We have identified key areas where closer cooperation will pay off and they include carbon trading and Sharia-compliant finance. Both offer unique opportunities that have significant potential for future growth. The UK's capabilities in these fields are world class and we want to work with our counterparts in the US, particularly in the energy industry, to develop business to our mutual benefit."

In Miami (21 – 22 January), the Lord Mayor will make a keynote speech at the 'Carbon Markets North America Conference 2010'.

In Tampa (24 – 25 January), will take part in a discussion on the UK's response to the financial crisis and recent European Union regulatory developments.

In Charlotte (25 – 26 January), the Lord Mayor plans to meet with his counterpart Anthony Foxx, Mayor of Charlotte and participate in a banking industry roundtable event.

As well as touring the BP Rodeo Helios Plaza facility in Houston (26-29 January), the Lord Mayor will participate in a series of events designed to highlight how Sharia-compliant finance can provide an alternative capital raising stream for the US oil and gas industries.

In Dallas (29-30 January), the Lord Mayor is scheduled to meet Richard Fisher, President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, and engage with key industry players in the energy sector.

The Lord Mayor's car travel while in the USA has been offset through a clean energy project Kurkumbh Bagasse in Pune, India.

About the Lord Mayor of the City of London:
The Lord Mayor is head of the Square Mile’s City of London authority for one year and the position is unpaid and apolitical. It is an exceptionally demanding role. The Lord Mayor spends some 90 days abroad and addresses some 10,000 people face-to-face each month (making around 800 speeches a year). The Lord Mayor represents City businesses and helps the City Corporation advise the Government of the day on what is needed to help the financial services sector to function well. The Lord Mayor frequently travels to represent the City; and travels overseas with the status of a Cabinet Minister. On average, the Lord Mayor will meet one head of state a month and will meet a prime minister or finance minister each week to discuss financial services, often in conjunction with senior City business representatives. The Lord Mayor, who is unpaid, lives in the Mansion House for the Mayoral year.
