Kids join in Epping Forest hedge planting

Photo opportunity:
When - 10.30am 22 February 2010
Where - Great Gregories Farm, Great Gregories Ln, Theydon Bois, Epping, Essex CM16 4EJ
What - Children from Theydon Bois Primary School join City Corporation and Epping Forest staff to start this year’s planting project.

Children from Theydon Bois Primary School will help to plant up to 1,000 shrubs on the edge of Epping Forest on 22 February 2010.

The event is part of an on-going project to establish a new indigenous hedge around the former farmland of Great Gregories to improve the natural biodiversity of the Forest buffer land. It is a joint scheme by the City of London Corporation, which manages Epping Forest, and Epping Forest District Council.

Around 100 children will spend the day planting up around 800 to 1,000 - approximately 160 metres - of hawthorn, hazel, blackthorn and other shrubs to create the mixed hedgerow. It is hoped that through the project, the children to gain a greater understanding and appreciation of their local environment.

Barbara Newman, Chairman of Epping Forest and Commons committee for the City of London Corporation, said: "This is a great opportunity for our staff to work with local children to help improve the biodiversity of the countryside on their doorstep."

The City of London Corporation will provide the shrubs, materials and staff to help with the planting.
