New marshalled taxi rank on Cornhill
The Safer City Partnership is trialling a new marshalled taxi
rank on Cornhill. Following on from the success of the existing
rank at Liverpool Street, the new rank aims to provide late night
revellers with a swift and safe way to get transport home by
ensuring an adequate supply of licensed taxi cabs. It is located
between two of the City’s busier clubs, Abacus and Revolution.
The new taxi rank will be marshalled from 11pm to 2am initially
on Friday and Saturday nights with the possibility of moving to
Thursday and Friday nights depending on demand. It will begin on
Friday 8 May for a two month trial period.
Over the course of last year, the Liverpool Street marshals saw
105,391 people safely into 52,100 taxis for their journey home.
This not only made sure that they were not getting into illegal
cabs, which are often uninsured and not in a roadworthy condition,
but made the streets of the City quieter for those living and
working in the area.
Simon Murrells, Chairman of the Safer City Partnership,
said:
- “The Safer City Partnership is committed to help make the City
a safer place which also encompasses helping people leave the City
late at night securely and with minimum disruption to others. As
the existing rank at Liverpool Street is proving so successful at
achieving these aims, the natural next step was to identify other
areas of the City which would benefit from such a
scheme.”
