City of London Lord Mayor leads visit to Turkey to forge closer
financial links with important business partners
City of London Lord Mayor Ian Luder arrives in Turkey on
Tuesday 17 March with a business delegation to spend four working
days in Ankara and Istanbul to help build stronger ties with
Turkey's key financial services decision-makers.
Lord Mayor Luder will meet Turkish officials and take part in
meetings on Alternative Dispute Resolution, PPP (Public Private
Partnership), Islamic Finance and Corporate Governance. The aim is
to share experience and create or enhance partnerships across the
Turkish financial, legal, educational, maritime and infrastructure
sectors.
Working alongside UK Trade & Investment and the Foreign
& Commonwealth Office, the Lord Mayor and his team will meet
the Istanbul Bar Association, the Istanbul Stock Exchange, and the
Chamber of Shipping, taking part in events with sponsored by the
Baltic Exchange and Maritime London, and City University's Cass
Business School.
Lord Mayor Luder, the global ambassador for the UK-based
financial services industry said: "Turkey is an important global
partner in commerce and industry with a highly dynamic and flexible
private sector - and a government that is determined to create the
conditions for it to flourish further. The City of London is
working closely with Turkey as it develops its financial services,
and this visit is a key element in that partnership.
"The UK strongly supports Turkey's full membership of the EU
which would mean mutual benefits in commerce, skills-sharing and
market access.
"Turkey is important, not only in its own right as a
fast-growing neighbour nation, but also as a bridge into the wider
region of Russia, Central Asia and the Middle East - with all of
which it has deep and ever-strengthening commercial ties.
"Of course, we are all facing challenging times at the moment
but Turkey's leadership and people are determined to continue
working hard to win a major role for Turkey on the world stage. The
City of London stands alongside them in their endeavour, and this
very full visit covers a wide range of financial services areas.
Turkey's business community understand that a strong financial
sector requires a broad base - from high quality education to
professional services - which is why this visit includes such a
wide range of elements."
