William Chapman takes up his post as Lord Mayor’s Private
Secretary
William Chapman takes up his job this week as the new Private
Secretary to the Lord Mayor of the City of London, based in the
Mansion House.
Mr Chapman, who takes over from Kay Brock, is in charge of some
70 City of London Corporation staff and is responsible for
supporting the City’s elected Lord Mayors in their wide-ranging
role undertaken overseas and at home on behalf of the UK-based
international financial services industry.
Lord Mayor Ian Luder – who is currently leading a City business
delegation to Vietnam and Malaysia, said: ‘William Chapman brings
valuable experience to the role and we welcome him to the City
during this time of challenge and renewal.
‘Kay Brock did a sterling job in her five years at Mansion House
and we will miss her. She goes on to new challenges, including
Chairmanship of the youth charity Dance United and a number of
advisory and consultancy roles.’
After six years at Oxford University, Mr Chapman joined the
Civil Service, working in the Department of the Environment and
successor departments in a range of policy, presentational, private
office and legislative roles. He was twice seconded to the Prime
Minister’s office, serving Prime Minister John Major between 1991
and 1994, and more recently, working for over eight years for Prime
Minister Tony Blair and then Prime Minister Gordon Brown as
Secretary for Appointments. In 2008 he joined the Tony Blair Faith
Foundation as its director of policy and in the same year was made
a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order by Her Majesty the Queen
in recognition of his work at Downing Street.
The role of Private Secretary was first created in 1875 and now
involves both strategic and day-today management of the Lord
Mayor’s team.
