Tower Bridge Exhibition reopens after lift accident
The Tower Bridge Exhibition has today (Thursday 14 May) reopened
to the public, following an accident in the North Tower lift on
Monday, in which six people were injured.
Access to the Exhibition, which attracts between 1,200 and 1,500
visitors each day at this time of the year, is via the North Tower
stairways while the North Tower lift remains closed.
Experts from the Health and Safety Executive have been carrying
out on-site inspections at Tower Bridge to help discover the cause
of the accident. Sixteen people were travelling in a 40-person lift
in the North Tower when it fell approximately 10ft. Six people
suffered injuries, including a broken ankle and broken leg, and
were taken to hospital.
Philip Everett, Director of Environmental Services at the City
of London Corporation, said: “We are working closely with the HSE
to determine the cause of Monday’s accident and, in the meantime,
we look forward to welcoming visitors back to the Exhibition at
Tower Bridge, which is one of London’s most popular landmarks.”
