New Exhibition at Guildhall Art Gallery looks to London and beyond

Trevor Chamberlain, who first exhibited at Guildhall Art Gallery in 1970 in the annual Lord Mayor’s Art Award, is returning to the gallery in the heart of the ‘Square Mile’ for his new show, London and Beyond, which opens on Monday 11 May and runs to Sunday 26 July.

Scenes from Greenwich, Kew, Richmond and Hammersmith will feature in the collection of over 100 oil and watercolour paintings, as well as views from as far afield as Armenia, India, Egypt and Iran. Some of the paintings will be available for purchase.

Concentrating mostly on marine subjects, town scenes and landscapes, Trevor Chamberlain seeks to ‘create an impression of nature and the spirit and atmosphere of a particular place, rather than a precise representation’.

Born in Hertford in 1933, Trevor began painting at the age of seven and, at 12 years old, he enrolled in painting classes under Alfred Wright at the Ware Institute. He worked as an architectural draughtsman until 1964, since when he has worked full time as a professional artist. He made his first painting trip abroad to Venice in 1970 and has since painted in every continent, except Australia.

He has exhibited widely at home and abroad, including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibitions and is a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Marine Artists and the Wapping Group of Artists (of which he has been President) and is also a Past President of the Chelsea Art Society. He has also published three books – Oils, Oil Painting Pure and Simple and Trevor Chamberlain: A Personal View, while 60 years of painting were celebrated with the publication of England and Beyond in 2006.

Admission to London and Beyond is free on purchase of a ticket (£2.50 for adults, concessions £1) to the gallery. Entry to Guildhall Art Gallery is free of charge to City workers and residents, as well as all day on Fridays and from 3.30pm on other days.
