City of London’s Lord Mayor visits Cyprus to strengthen business ties with key partner

New City of London Lord Mayor Ian Luder arrives in Cyprus (Monday) on a two and half-day visit to the EU’s easternmost country designed to strengthen its business and economic ties with the entire width of the UK-based financial services industry.

Lord Mayor Luder, who serves as global ambassador for the UK-based financial services industry, said:

“At a time when key elements of financial services are under severe strain globally, it’s important to remember that the business of “the City” includes a very wide range of expertise and services. This broad base includes the maritime industry in all its forms, insurance and re-insurance and, of course, the sharing of skills and training.

“ Cyprus is a key partner in some of these areas – and this visit is designed to re-enforce existing relationship and help build new ones.”

Lord Mayor Luder, who will spend a total of three months leading “City” business delegations to two dozen countries world-wide in 2009, is expected will meet key business, political and institutional leaders in both Nicosia and Limassol during the visit.

Lord Mayor Luder will meet (in date order) Cyprus President Demetris Christofias, Finance Minister Charilaos Stavrakis, Minister of Commerce, Industry & Tourism Antonis Paschalides , President of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce & Industry Manthos Mavromatis, Central Bank Governor Athanasios Orphanides, CEOs of Cyprus-based banks, leaders of the Cyprus Stock Exchange plus key stockbroking and accounting firms, the Cyprus-U Business Assocation, and the Limassol Chamber of Commerce & Industry,

The Securities and Investment Institute and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales are taking part in the visit, alongside Maritime London and Lloyd’s of London.

The overall aim of the visit, which follows a City Lord Mayor’s visit to Cyprus in 2005, is to promote links with the financial, maritime and other business services industry based in the UK and champion the international expertise of the City of London in the Cypriot market place.

Lord Mayor Luder will also further encourage Cypriot companies to raise finance in London and promoting partnership with the City’s financial and legal services. London ’s expertise in carbon emissions trading will also be highlighted.
