Lord Mayor visits City of London Academy - Islington

The Lord Mayor with some Academy pupils The Lord Mayor of the City of London, Ian Luder, will visit City of London Academy - Islington on Wednesday 25 March. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London Corporation, which sponsors the Academy alongside City University London. It will be the first visit by a Lord Mayor since the Academy opened in September 2008.

Year 9 students will welcome the Lord Mayor with a special assembly, in which they will play the Saz instrument and dance.  The Saz is a Middle Eastern instrument which is particularly popular in Turkey.

The Lord Mayor, who will travel to over 20 countries this year to promote UK business, said:

“Having just returned from leading a successful business trip to Turkey, I have seen at first-hand how strong the links between the UK and Turkey are. So I am delighted that students at City of London Academy - Islington have the opportunity to learn about Turkish culture.”

The City of London Corporation and City University London bring top expertise to support the Academy’s specialism in Business and Enterprise. The Lord Mayor, an eminent tax accountant, said:

“I am passionate about financial literacy and have chosen it as the theme for my mayoral year. I believe that all young people should be taught the skills to manage their money and to plan their finances. So I am proud that, as a Business and Enterprise Specialist Academy, City of London Academy - Islington makes financial literacy a priority.”

City of London Academy - Islington opened in September 2008 and is sponsored by City University London and the City of London Corporation. It is a mixed, non-selective school with no religious affiliations, for students aged 11 to 16 and is committed to providing excellence in education and opportunity.
