Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress on West Ham Park Express

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress in the West Ham Park Express Lord Mayor of the City of London Ian Luder and Lady Mayoress Lin Luder toured West Ham Park in style on a Thomas The Tank Engine train on 17 June (Wednesday).

The Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress were introduced to the Superintendent of West Ham Park, Don Lawson. They and other management committee members tour the park in style on a Thomas The Tank Engine train named West Ham Park Express for the day. The Express was free all the children in the park that day.

The group visited the new outdoor roaming exhibition entitled ‘Riches Uncovered’ by artist Clare Newton which explores East London Heritage through art. It uses a unique combination of photographic montages researched by local volunteers and schools.

The Lord Mayor was also particularly interested in the new food growing project near the playground which involved Newham’s Community Links, Lister School and other keen volunteers. The project illustrates how the local community can grow their own food in confined spaces, organically and sustainably.

Lord Mayor Ian Luder said: ‘There are parks and there are parks. West Ham is a park apart and is definitely in the Premier League. Whether it is the Wildflower Meadow, the Rose Garden, the Ornamental Gardens, the new arts exhibition ‘Riches Uncovered’ or even the new paddling pool, West Ham Park really does have something for everyone.’

The tour concluded with the Lord Mayor and the Lady Mayoress planting a Cornus 'Eddie's White Wonder' near the newly refurbished main entrance, to commemorate the visit.

West Ham Park is a 77 acre park in the London Borough of Newham. It has been owned and managed by the City of London since 1874 making the Park its oldest open space.
