City takes the plunge for Lord Mayor’s charity

Workers and residents from across London will be making a splash this week (Friday 27 and Saturday 28 February) as they gather at the Golden Lane Leisure Centre (owned and managed by the City of London Corporation) to take part in the City of London’s annual City Dip to raise money for this year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

The charity event, opened by the Lord Mayor Ian Luder, will begin with a City of London schools relay.  The livery companies have also come out in force to raise money for the Appeal, and the Needlemakers, Basketmakers and Tylers and Brickmakers are all competing in this year’s Dip.

This year’s Dip has been incorporated into the new Healthy Lifestyles Project being run within City of London schools.  This project has been designed to focus on local children’s health and wellbeing, and includes increasing access to a variety of sports and providing useful nutritional information.

The charities benefitting from this year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal are St John Ambulance and the Lord’s Taverners. With the money raised from the appeal the Lord’s Taverners will be helping disadvantaged City children enjoy sport while St John Ambulance are donating 1000 defibrillators to help combat the incidence of fatalities from heart attacks.

The Lord Mayor, Ian Luder, said:

“The City Dip is always a fantastic event that brings together residents, workers, schools and livery companies from across the Capital for two wonderful charities.  The Lord’s Taverners and St John Ambulance do incredibly worthy work for the City of London and I very much thank all the City Dip participants for diving in for this year’s Lord Mayor’s Appeal”.

The City Dip is a 5,000 metre (three miles) swim, which can be completed either by an individual or by a team of up to 6 people.  Last year’s Dip raised in excess of £21,000 for the 2008 Lord Mayor’s Appeal.

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal 2009 – Building Lives, Saving Lives
www.thelordmayorsappeal.org

The ‘building lives, saving lives’ theme embraces the essence of the two principal charities the Lord Mayor has chosen to benefit from the funds raised by his Appeal – The Lord’s Taverners and St John Ambulance London (Prince of Wales’s) District.  ‘Building lives’ reflects the youth cricket and special needs initiatives undertaken by The Lord’s Taverners. ‘Saving lives’ reflects the crucial live-saving work carried out by St John Ambulance.
