The Foreign Secretary's City Breakfast

11 February 2008

Strengthening the City of London as a European and global financial hub was the key message at a meeting held this morning (Monday) between the Foreign Secretary, David Miliband MP, and a group of leading City of London businessmen and women.

The working breakfast, held at the Guildhall, also gave the Foreign Secretary an opportunity to discuss the Government’s delivery agenda for Europe [see http://www.fco.gov.uk/Files/kfile/FCO_BEU_DOC_GlobalEurope71022.pdf], the City’s priorities in Europe in 2008 and beyond, and future partnerships between City business and the Foreign Office.

The Foreign Secretary said:

"A vibrant City of London is crucial for British, European and global prosperity. In partnership together, the Government, the City and the European Union are working ever more closely to boost jobs and foster economic growth both here and in the EU over the coming years."

Michael Snyder, Chairman of Policy and Resources at the City of London Corporation, said:

"I warmly welcome the opportunity to discuss with the Foreign Secretary a range of important areas, with a focus on strengthening the City’s position as a driving force in the UK economy and a global hub at the heart of an EU that makes the most of a globalised world."
