Charles Brooking honoured in the City of London
On Monday 20 October at 11am the Lord Mayor of the City of London,
Alderman David Lewis, will unveil a blue plaque to honour the 18th
century marine artist Charles Brooking. Significantly, next year
will be the 250th anniversary of Mr Brooking’s death (b1723 –
1759).
The plaque will be placed in Token House Yard, EC2 where the
artist lived in 1754. He is perhaps the finest sea painter of his
period, a time when British sea power was in the ascendant, and his
paintings are held by a number of museums, organisations and
private individuals, both in the UK and overseas.
The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich holds a significant
collection of his paintings, they along with The Paul Mellon Centre
for Studies in British Art, the Yale Centre for British Art, The
Hull Ferens Art Gallery and the V&A sent letters of support for
the plaque application which was made by the Brooking Society.
The Baptism of Brooking's son Charles took place at St.
Margaret, Lothbury on 6 February 1757.
Ends
If you would like photographs of the unveiling or the plaque
itself they will be available from the City of London Press Office
after the event.
There will be an exhibition of Charles Brooking's work at
Southeby's New Bond Street 19 - 30 July and then at St Barbe
Museum, Lymington 15 August -17 October 2009.
