The Lord Mayor of the City of London hosts Judges' Dinner

The Lord Mayor of the City of London, David Lewis, is hosting the annual dinner to Her Majesty’s Judges today (Tuesday) at Mansion House.

The dinner will be attended by the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, and The Secretary of State for Justice and the Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, Jack Straw.

In his speech to to the Lord Chief Justice and the Lord High Chancellor, the Lord Mayor will say: "Although globalisation has helped UK legal services a great deal and UK lawyers have been a great success story, we can never be complacent either about the Rule of Law or the success of the UK legal sector."

The Lord Mayor will also say that lawyers in the City are fierce defenders of Common Law and, on his extensive travels around the world in the role of ambassador for the UK financial services sector, he often makes the point that the UK's judges are impartial, dependable, consistent and not corrupt, that fairness is their watchword and that English Law is the law of choice.
