New Sheriffs of London to take office

Friday 26 September 2008, from 12.00 noon
Guildhall Yard, London EC2

There will be a short opportunity to photograph the new Sheriffs of London in the Guildhall Yard at approximately 12.10pm on Friday 26 September.

Alderman Roger Gifford and Mr George Gillon, both of Cordwainer ward, will be admitted to office at the Guildhall on Friday.

Elected in June this year, they will take over from Alderman and Sheriff Ian Luder (Castle Baynard ward) and Alderman and Sheriff Michael Bear (Portsoken ward) three days before the new Lord Mayor of the City is elected on Monday 29 September. The Lord Mayor Elect will take office on Friday 7 November.

While the office of Sheriff dates back to the Middle Ages and is of long-standing importance in the government of the City of London, its holders also take an increasing role in supporting the Lord Mayor and City Corporation in promoting and sustaining the Square Mile business district, for example in meeting senior business and political visitors from overseas.

The Sheriffs’ role also includes attending the Lord Mayor in carrying out official duties, attending the sessions at the Central Criminal Court in the Old Bailey and presenting petitions from the City to Parliament at the Bar at the House of Commons.
