Millennium Bridge temporary closure

Between Monday 20 and Friday 24 October 2008 the City of London will be undertaking an inspection of the Millennium Bridge. The bridge will be closed between 10.00am and 4.00pm hours daily so that the work can be carried out. Pedestrians will need to use alternative crossings at Southwark Bridge or Blackfriars Bridge.

The bridge must be closed during the inspection so that the deck of the bridge can be lifted to allow inspection of all parts of the structure.  Specialist rope access teams and inspection engineers will climb out on the towers, cables and bridge piers to inspect the bridge.  A survey team will also check the profile of the support cables.

At the same time as the structural inspection, an electrical inspection will be carried out, the bridge will be cleaned and some surveying and maintenance work will be done. All the City's highway structures are inspected routinely every two years and every third inspection, the 'Principal Inspection', is more thorough.  This is a Principal Inspection.

The bridge is owned and maintained at no cost to taxpayer by the City of London Corporation as trustee.
