MBE for musical maestro of City of London
Among City figures honoured in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours is
Damian Cranmer, former Director of Music at the world-renowned
Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Mr Cranmer, 63, of Redbourn, Herts, received the MBE for
services to music. During his 19 years at the Guildhall School of
Music and Drama he helped make it one of the most prestigious
centres of music in the world.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr Cranmer is a substantial
contributor to the authoritative Grove’s Dictionary of Music and
Musicians and a pioneer of the teaching of jazz at conservatoire
level. He led the Guildhall School’s musical outreach work into
disadvantaged communities, as well as founding the children’s
“Ready Steady Blow” concerts for brass and wind at the Barbican
Arts Centre.

financial and commercial heart of the UK, and is committed to
maintaining and enhancing the status of the business City as the
world's leading international financial and business centre. Its
responsibilities also extend far beyond the City boundaries and
include management of the Barbican Centre, Central Criminal Court
at the Old Bailey, 10,000 acres of open space including Hampstead
Heath and Epping Forest, three wholesale food markets, as well as
acting as the London Port Health Authority.
