In a Masterclass of their own: battle of the business plan for
young people in and around the City
The City of London Corporation has teamed up with City
University’s Centre for Career and Skills Development to offer
students from in and around the City a series of unique business
workshops. The City of London Business Masterclass is a new
initiative that offers young people the chance to pitch their
business ideas to a panel of City experts, and gain firsthand
experience of a real corporate environment.
From brief to budget, students from City fringe boroughs
developed their proposals through a day of specialised seminars
with the first on Tuesday 14 October 2008 at Cass Business School.
Following a morning of training and instruction, the teams of 10 –
drawn together from eight London colleges - competed in a mock
trade fair. After presenting their brainchild to a board of
potential investors, the most promising idea and a winning group
were declared.
Stuart Fraser, Chairman of the Policy and Resources Committee at
the City of London Corporation, says, ‘Even in the current turmoil,
the City can often seem a world away from everyday school life in
London’s inner-city suburbs. The Business Masterclass is a stepping
stone into the professional world on their doorstep. It works by
channeling the passion of young creative minds and providing the
practical tools and knowhow needed to bring a business idea to
life. Such skills are the basis of business and those who acquire
them will have an important advantage.”
The schools who attended the Business Masterclass on Tuesday 14
October 2008 are:
- City and Islington College, Islington
- Stoke Newington Comprehensive, Hackney
- Cardinal Pole, Hackney
- Skinners School for Girls, Hackney
- Clapton Technology School for Girls, Hackney
- Tower Hamlets College, Tower Hamlets
- Dunraven College, Lambeth
- Our Lady’s Convent, Hackney
