City Lord Mayor visits Swanlea School, Whitechapel, to mark the
opening of 2008 Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards
ON Tuesday 6 May 2008, Lord Mayor David Lewis visited Swanlea
School, Whitechapel to see how the work of the financial giant
Merrill Lynch has helped to raise the career aspirations of
youngsters at the school.
Merrill Lynch, winners of the 2007 Lord Mayor’s Award category
of the Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards, works with students from the
school as part of their ‘Responsible Citizenship Programme’.
Hundreds of students aged 12 -16 at Swanlea and nearby Bow and
Mulberry Schools have taken part in activities delivered by Merrill
Lynch employees aimed at introducing them to the world of work,
improving their financial literacy, communication and work-related
skills.
The visit gave the Lord Mayor the opportunity to interact with
current students from Merrill Lynch’s ‘Enterprise and
Entrepreneurship Programme’ as well as teachers from the school in
order to gain an insight into the benefits of the partnership with
the financial firm. Bob Wigley, Chairman of Merrill Lynch Europe,
Middle East and Africa, was also present at the visit, and Lord
Mayor David Lewis was able to thank him personally for the
company's dedication and commitment to their work with the City
fringe’s secondary school students.
Lord Mayor David Lewis said: “Merrilll Lynch employees, like
many other Dragon Award winners, are daily making a huge difference
to this school and the whole community. They provide very tangible
evidence of what the City does for London.”
The visit marked the run up to the opening of the 2008 Lord
Mayor’s Dragon Awards on Monday 12 May which recognise and
celebrate Corporate Community Involvement. Companies and public
bodies of all sizes in greater London are invited to enter the
awards from Monday 12 May 2008. For more information and details
