New Hackney Academy gets planning go ahead

25 January 2008

The City of London KPMG Academy in Homerton has been given planning permission by Hackney Council and an award - winning partnership has been chosen to build it.

Construction firm Willmott Dixon will be the construction contractor for the City of London KPMG Academy in collaboration with the project’s architects, Studio E.

They previously developed the City of London Academy, in Southwark, - chosen by former Prime Minister, Tony Blair, as the winner of the Better Public Building Award in 2006.

The £35 million City of London KPMG Academy will have a commitment to sustainability.

Michael Snyder, Chairman of the City of London’s Policy and Resources Committee, commenting on the appointment of the construction contractor, said:

“We know from our previous experience of the City of London Academy that Willmott Dixon and Studio E are a winning combination and we have great confidence in their ability to create an inspiring, first class, learning environment for young people in Hackney.”

Mark Emmerson, Principal of the City of London KPMG Academy said:

“Having worked in Hackney education for a number of years I know that the Homerton area deserves a successful, transformational school. I believe that the new building will provide an inspirational setting for learning and teaching.”

Councillor Rita Krishna, Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said:

“The improvement in educational attainment among Hackney schoolchildren in recent years is unprecedented and academies are contributing towards this. I welcome the addition of the City of London KPMG Academy to Hackney’s family of schools.”
