HM Queen honours former Lord Mayor of City of London
Former Lord Mayor Alderman John Stuttard has today been awarded
a Knighthood for public service in the Queen’s New Year’s
Honours.
Alderman Stuttard – now Sir John Stuttard – was Lord Mayor of
the City of London and elected head of the City of London

During his year in office he travelled widely worldwide to
promote the UK’s international financial services industry based in
the Square Mile – leading business visits to 22 countries.
Sir John said: “One of the most important duties of the Lord
Mayor is to be ambassador for all UK-based financial services at
home and abroad. I thoroughly enjoyed my year and it has been a
great privilege to represent the City of London.
“I am, of course, delighted to receive this honour which
recognises all the support I have received from the City of London
Corporation, our embassies and a wide range of the business
community.”

compliance. In 1981 he was seconded for two years to the UK Cabinet
Office, advising on the nationalized industries and their
privatisation.
For 10 years he was Chairman of the firm’s Scandinavian Group
and was awarded the honour of Commander of the Order of the Lion of
Finland for services to the country and, until recently, he has
been Chairman of the Finnish-British Chamber of Commerce. He was
Executive Chairman of the firm’s business in China for five years,
living in Shanghai and Beijing - and has been Director of
China-Britain Business Council.
Among his many posts, Sir John is Alderman for Lime Street ward
in the City of London, a JP - and served as Sheriff of the City of
London from 2005 – 2006. He will serve as Pro-Chancellor and Chair
of the City University’s Council when Sir David Howard stands down
next July.
Born in 1945 and educated at Shrewsbury School and Churchill
College, Cambridge, Sir John is married to Lesley. They have two
sons, Tom and Jamie, both of whom work in the financial services
industry in London and both of whom are married. Sir John’s
interests include travelling, opera, theatre, tennis, and driving
vintage cars. In 1997 he drove a 1934 Ross Royce 10,000 miles from
Beijing to Paris and is author of a book The New Silk Road: Secrets
