27, 28 February and 1 March 2007

Barbican Library staff will take to the streets of the Square Mile in fancy dress to encourage City workers to join up in advance of World Book Day on 1 March.

The City membership drive, at lunchtimes on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 February is to raise awareness of the range of services available at the library, beyond book borrowing. This includes an excellent music and video / DVD library, free internet access, an extensive children’s library, free spoken word material and reading groups. The event also coincides with celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the Barbican Centre.

Librarians, dressed as famous characters from stage, screen or art gallery shows held at the Barbican Centre over the last 25 years, will offer information on the library whilst also handing out free refreshments and cake to City workers.

And on Thursday 1st March, the library will host an all-day competition to guess the characters behind the librarians’ costumes. Winners will receive free tickets to events at the Barbican Centre.

There will also be information and promotions relating to World Book Day, which encourages reading for all.

Barbican librarian John Lake said: "At present, many City workers don’t belong to the library and don’t know about the services we provide.

"As well as books, we offer a host of other services. Membership to the library is free and we really hope as many people as possible in the City will take this opportunity to see what we have on offer."
