Slovakians and Slovenians arrive for ten weeks’ work in the
City
Twelve highfliers from the world of finance in Slovakia and
Slovenia have arrived at the start of 10-week placements with
leading City firms.
The group were welcomed at an opening reception for the City of
London Programme for Slovenia and Slovakia at the Innholder's Hall,
attended by the Ambassador of Slovenia and the Charge d'Affaires of
Slovakia.
The programme aims to build personal and corporate links between
the City and figures of influence in the new Member States, thus
facilitating the development of their own financial markets and
encouraging moves towards the development of a true single market
for financial services in the enlarged EU.
Stuart Fraser, the City’s Deputy Chairman of Policy greeted the
group at the reception:
“I’m delighted to welcome you to the City at the start of this,
the fifth City of London Programme. Relations between the UK and
Slovenia and Slovakia are excellent, for example, the UK is the
11th largest exporter to Slovenia, and it is the sixth largest
investor in Slovakia.
“We share the same commitment to free and open markets. This
programme offers a great opportunity to share experience in
regulation and other issues to develop the way we work in the
future.”
The City runs the annual City of London Programme for financial
professionals from each of the new EU Member States to boost the
capacity of their markets, practitioners and regulators to manage
their business following EU accession, and to build or reinforce
links with the City.
Eleven Slovenian and Slovakian participants are attending this
year’s ten-week programme. They are all senior people from the
financial service sector of their home country, and include a
senior advisor to the Slovenian Ministry of Finance, an Assistant
Director from the Bank of Slovenia, the Head of Supervision at the
National Bank of Slovakia and the Head of the International
Administrative Cooperation Unit at the Slovak Republic Tax
Directorate.
They are spending their time with HMRC, PWC, JP Morgan, HSBC,
FSA, Norton Rose, Schroder Investment Management, Goldman Sachs and
HM Treasury.
The first programme in 2003 was dedicated to practitioners and
regulators from the Czech Republic, in 2004 the focus was Poland;
followed by Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia in 2005; and Hungary in
2006.
