Lord Mayor of the City of London John Stuttard asked to be
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of City University London Council
Lord
Mayor John Stuttard, who currently represents the world’s
leading financial services industry, based in the Square Mile,
has agreed to serve as City University London’s next
Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of its Council, when Sir David
Howard stands down next July.
Lord Mayor Stuttard has made skills and education a key theme
during his tenure, under the banner “City of London - City of
Learning”. This initiative promotes the City as the place to gain a
top-class, internationally recognised education – something which
echoes the ethos of City University London.
He said: “City University London is at the heart of the UK’s
worldwide reputation for excellent education and I am honoured to
be asked to serve as Pro-Chancellor, especially as this will follow
Sir David’s very distinguished contribution.
“City University London ranks fifth for graduate employability
in The Times Good University Guide 2008. It is one of the jewels in
the crown of UK education and I will be proud to help it maintain
and improve its reputation.”
“Education – and in particular the skills and training needed
for jobs in our world-class financial services industry – is a
passion of mine; nothing transforms an individual or a society like
good education and City University London is a beacon of the best
especially in business and professional subjects.”
Lord Mayor Stuttard is currently the Chancellor of City University
London, as every Lord Mayor of London is. In his new role as
Pro-Chancellor of City, Lord Mayor Stuttard will also be the Chair
of the University’s Council, responsible for setting the strategic
direction and ensuring compliance with all statutory
requirements.
When he retires in July 2008, Sir David will have served 13
years altogether on Council, with the last five years of his
service as Chair.
Professor Malcolm Gillies, City University London’s Vice-Chancellor
and President, said: “The quality of student learning is
central to our mission and Lord Mayor Stuttard’s dedication to
education sits well with our aims to provide a first-rate,
student-centred education for all who come to further their
ambitions with us.
“That Lord Mayor Stuttard has used his skills on the global
stage fits perfectly with City’s ethos; our student body is truly
international both in its make-up and outlook. What’s more, his
links with industry will serve as an inspiration to our students,
many of whom are already focused on their professional careers both
here and abroad.”
“Sir David Howard’s contribution in steering City University
London to ever greater heights has been immense and thousands of
alumni, as well as University staff and students owe him a large
debt of gratitude for his dedicated service and leadership. Next
year, when the transition occurs, we shall celebrate Sir David’s
great works for City University London.”
