City of London Corporation gives £25,000 to Red Cross Darfur
appeal
The City of London Corporation, a long-standing supporter of the
Red Cross, has announced an immediate grant of £25,000 to help
towards an urgent £2million bid to aid 80,000 adults and 20,000
children in Gereida refugee camp, Darfur.
The City of London Corporation, which looks after and promotes
the Square Mile business district around St Paul’s, made the grant
in response to Red Cross’s appeal for cash to help its 1,500 staff
in Sudan in the Horn of Africa (where, since 2003 more than four
million people have been affected by the Darfur conflict across an
area the size of France).
Lord Mayor John Stuttard, currently in India working to promote
the UK-based financial services industry, said: “We responded
swiftly to the Red Cross’s appeal because its work in Darfur is to
help people at the very edge of life. I hope others will join us
and help the Red Cross help those who are suffering greatly.”
The City of London Corporation’s grants to the Red Cross
recently include £25,000 to the Asian earthquake aid effort and –
with its charity the City Bridge Trust - £250,000 in 2005 to help
the Red Cross develop its Emergency Response operation in
London.
