“Chaingang” strolling into town again - All London Mayors’ Charity Walk

Lord Mayor of the City of London John Stuttard leads the other 32 London borough Mayors on five-mile charity walk from Dick Whittington Memorial Stone, Highgate Hill, (near Whittington Memorial Hospital, N16) on Sunday morning (11 March)

Picture and TV calls:

10.30am - Walk sets off from Dick Whittington (and cat) statue N16 – where Whittington “turned again”
11.45am – The 33 Mayors (in robes and trainers) toast Dick Whittington at Garden pub Upper St, Islington
12.45pm – Bagpipers and horsemen welcome the Mayors into the City near Finsbury Circus

The 34th annual fund-raising walk for the London Mayors' Association celebrates the City’s most famous son – and gives the London borough mayors the chance to set aside their hectic schedules and catch up on each others’ boroughs.

Lord Mayor of the City of London John Stuttard said: "Dick Whittington held office as Lord Mayor in 1397, 1406 and 1419. Much of the story is myth, however, he was a successful businessman - dealing in costly fabrics such as silk and wool - and a royal financier.

"If he was alive today Lord Mayor Whittington would have been busy promoting the financial services industry – especially in China and India.

"Dick Whittington would have been proud to see his City as the world's leading international financial and business centre, employing 300,000 and contributing billions to the UK and European economies."

As previous years, the Mayors in their robes and chains meandering through the streets and heading for the City of London will be an interesting sight for all.
