A family affair - Lady Mayoress opens Family Learning Room
The Lady Mayoress of the City of London, Mrs Lesley Stuttard,
formally opened the refurbished Family Learning Room at the very
successful City Corporation-funded Sir John Cass’s Foundation
Primary School on Thursday 27 June.
Pictured are (from left to right) Nora, Rayhaan, Jolene, Adrita,
and Sara demonstrating to the Lady Mayoress Lesley Stuttard how to
make a healthy family size fruit salad in the new family
room. Lady Mayoress was delighted to learn their recipe and
praised all of them for their brilliant skills.
The Family Learning Room offers a safe, non-threatening
environment for parents to learn. Classes on offer this year
include: English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL); Computer
Skills; First Aid; Craft, Sewing and Textiles; Volunteering in Your
Child’s School; Introduction to Childcare, Family Cookery and
Family Spanish as well as the Family Literacy and Numeracy
programme. A crèche also runs alongside the classes to enable
parents to access classes.
The Lady Mayoress said: “I hope many more parents from the City
and neighbouring communities can come and use this newly
refurbished family room. This room not only provides the crucial
steps for parents to learn new skills before moving on to college
or work, it also allows them to network and obtain much-needed
support from other parents.”
Notes for editors
Sir John Cass’s Foundation Primary School is the only primary
school in the City. Located at Aldgate in the Square Mile, it has
just under 200 children between the ages of four and eleven on its
roll. It also houses the Cass Child and Family Centre which
provides integrated care for children aged three months to six
years.
Mother-tongue languages spoken by children at Sir John Cass’s
Primary School include Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, English, French,
German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Punjabi, Spanish and Yaruba. The Cass
family fortune was substantially enhanced by re-building contracts
after the 1666 Great Fire of London.
