Regent Street celebrates 180 years of shopping with ‘A Mile of
Style’ exhibition at the Guildhall Art Gallery
To celebrate the 180 years of Regent Street there will be an
exhibition A Mile of Style (12 April – 30 June 2007) at the
Guildhall Art Gallery, in the heart of London’s square mile, which
will reveal the fascinating story of Europe’s most famous shopping
thoroughfare through archival documents, maps, photographs and
plans. It is the result of a unique collaboration between the City
of London Guildhall Art Gallery, Westminster City Archives and The
Crown Estate and was made possible thanks a to a £20,000 grant from
the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). The exhibition will also coincide
with the launch of a new and revised edition of the History of
Regent Streetby Hermione Hobhouse, which will be available for
purchase from the Gallery shop.
The exhibition will be supplemented by a range of educational
activities that will encourage young people to explore this
fascinating aspect of London ’s heritage. Opportunities for
involvement include textile and printing workshops alongside guided
tours and talks.
Prestigious heritage retail fashion brands AQUASCUTUM (est.
1851) JAEGER (est. 1884), and AUSTIN REED (est. 1900) will be
participating in the three-month exhibition. These classic brands
will reveal some of their most treasured archive pieces; graphic
art and advertising material, original fashion designs and vintage
costumes all for public viewing for the first time.
For more than 100 years, each of these classic British brands
has enjoyed a reputation for high quality clothing and innovative
design. Jaeger and Aquascutum in particular have drawn inspiration
from their vast archive for the most current collection for
Spring/Summer 2007.
Regent Street has witnessed an exhilarating pace of change
within the past 18 months following a £500 million development
programme by The Crown Estate. It is fascinating to watch this
historical and iconic street become a vital shopping district for
an exclusive range of global names, including GERRY WEBER , BROOKS
BROTHERS, TIMBERLAND, DUCHAMP, HABITAT, PENHALIGONS, APPLE,
BURBERRY and BOSE.
