The City of London manages and maintains the highway drainage
system and 820 fire hydrants throughout the 'Square Mile'.
The City of London are also responsible for the management and
maintenance of 6km of service subways under the highway in which
water, gas, electricity and telecommunications companies place
their apparatus. The use of these subways dramatically reduces the
need for these companies to excavate in the highway, thus reducing
the disruption to the general public.
Thames Water Utilities employs the City of London as its sewer
management contractor in the 'Square Mile' with
responsibility for the day to day maintenance of the network that
totals 72km in length and and to look after its interest in any
associated planning issues. In conjunction with the large number of
developments that take place within the 'Square Mile', the City of
London undertakes major sewer diversions and reconstruction works
to enable these schemes to take place. The City of London is the
only London Authority to carry out this work on behalf of Thames
Water Utilities.
