Smoke Free legislation

On 1 July 2007 Smoke Free legislation was introduced throughout England and the London Port Health Authority (LPHA) is the enforcement authority for relevant premises within its area - the port and its environs. The LPHA will promote the legislation, monitor compliance and intervene when necessary in response to complaints regarding contraventions.

If you have a concern or require further advice on this subject, please contact your local port office.

Further information and other support material to assist businesses and the general public can be downloaded from the Smokefree England website.

The Department for Transport consulted on the proposed restriction of smoking on sea-going and inland waterway vessels and the Department of Transport's enforcement decision is awaited.  The LPHA contributed toward the response by the Association of Port Health Authorities (APHA) and put forward its own observations on the proposals.

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health played a major part in the introduction of the Smoke Free Legislation and further information can be found on the CIEH website.

River craft operators have voluntarily accepted the restrictions pending the introduction of formal measures, advice is available to operators from our Charlton Office.
