Fees and Charges for LMA copying Services
Please note that all these prices apply to orders made
in person in the LMA Archive Study Area, once you have
consulted original documents yourself.
Distance orders incur an additional research fee of a minimum of
£12.50 for assessing the cost of copies from one document; requests
from multiple documents are charged at a minimum of £25 because of
the work we need to do to satisfy the order. Typically we need to
identify the original item(s) fully, have it produced from the
strongrooms, assess what form of copying is most suitable and
provide costings (often involving further discussion with the
enquirer).
The rates are set according to our hourly Family History
Research Service which is £50 per hour. It reflects the fact that
we have to undertake work on behalf of distance users which we do
not have to undertake when the enquiry is in person, and that in
our experience the fees represent a reasonable average time needed
to deal with all the processes around such requests. Please
contact our enquiry team for information.
All prices quoted include VAT at 20%

Digital Scans to file
There are five services of digital delivery that fall under two
categories; Standard Service (A, B and C) and Professional Service
(D and E).
Standard Service
Service A and B
This is intended for web use and is a small file size condensed
using JPEG compression. This makes it ideal for transmitting via
the Internet and placing on web pages. Please note, however, that
any fine detail is lost. Although useful for reference, it is
unsuitable for print reproduction or research purposes.
Note: JPEG files are compressed for transportation purposes. When
opened, they output to the size specified.
Service A
- Maximum file size: Approximately 1.0mb or 768 x 512
pixels.
- Intended for web use only.
- Capable of printing a thumb nail sized image.
- A compressed file approximately 126kb JPG can be sent via
e-mail.
- Ideal for most uses on the web and low resolution
print-outs.
Service B (Slightly higher quality then service A)
- Maximum file size: Approximately 4.5mb or 1536 x 1024
pixels.
- Capable of producing up to an A6 printed page.
- A compressed file approximately 302kb JPEG can be sent via
e-mail.
- This is considered suitable for large web images and small
print reproductions.
Service C
- Maximum file size: Approximately 18mb or 470 x 3200
pixels.
- Capable of producing up to an A5 - A4 printed page.
- An uncompressed Tiff file or a compressed JPEG will be sent via
CD/DVD, this will be chargeable.
- This service is recommended for general use by customers and
not for professional outputs. Files under this bracket are a higher
resolution compared to services A and B.
Professional Scanning Service
Service D
- Maximum file size: Approximately 30mb.
- Capable of producing up to an A4 – A3 printed page.
- This service is useful for reproduction of smaller items such
as engravings from books or details from manuscripts. It is not
recommended for high quality large reproductions, or indeed large
items such as maps.
Service E
- Maximum file size: Approximately 80mb (although it may be
larger if the item being scanned is very large or unusually
detailed).
- Capable of producing a good quality print output to
approximately A2-A0 size.
- This service is useful for large items in the collection such
as maps, where scaled images are required or where investigation of
fine detail is required.
- An uncompressed Tiff file will be sent via CD/DVD, which is
non-chargeable.
Digital Output (Print & CD)
- Most digital files are supplied at 300ppi (pixels per inch) as
a standard.
- The colour depth used is approx 24 bits, and the colour space
is RGB or CMYK.
- Scans up to A3 size are printed on thick paper = 100gsm in
weight.
- Larger prints (A2 – A0) are supplied in two formats as
follows;
Standard paper with a
matt finish = 120gsm in weight
Heavy weighted paper
with a silk finish = 180gsm in weight.
- The number of files that can be burnt onto a CD or DVD is
dependant upon the quality and file size of a scan. As a guideline,
the approximate capacity of a CD is 640mb and a DVD 4000mb
(4gb).
- Scanned orders may be kept on the system for up to two weeks
(from the date of despatch). If there is a problem with an
order, where a file needs to be reproduced, there may be a further
charge incurred.
- The turnaround time for digital scans and prints is 4 working
days – this does not include delivery time.

Microfilms
This format is good for material required for large quantities
of reference material for long term study (where a durable copy is
required) or to supplement existing archive material.
New Filming
- New filming is supplied in frames - a page of printed text in a
standard sized book normally equates to one frame.
- A Negative film (white text on a black background) is produced
from new filming. This has approximately 500 years archival
life.
- Depending on the content, a decision will be made as to whether
a new negative will be deposited for use in the Archive. If this
occurs, the customer will need to pay for a copy of the film in
addition to the cost of new filming.
Duplicate filming
- Silver positive film produces a positive output (black text on
a white background) and has approximately 500 years archival
life.
- Diazo film produces a negative output (white text on a black
background) and has approximately 50 years archival life.
- Both copying mediums are supplied on archival quality 35 mm
films.
Prints from Microfilm
This service can be used to apply for up to two copies of parish
register events only when the exact details can be provided. This
means that you need to provide the name of the church, the event,
name(s) of the person(s) involved, the day, month and the year that
the event happened. The fee is £8.75 and you can apply for
copies by completing the Prints from Microfilm application form. If
you do not have the exact details (for example, if you only know
the name of the church and the year of an event) it is necessary to
use the Family History Research Service. This is due to the
considerable time it can take to search even just one years worth
of entries in a majority of London churches.
