Equality Framework

The City of London Corporation was externally assessed as achieving Level 3 of the Equality Standard for Local Government in 2007. We adopted its successor, the Equality Framework for Local Government, in May 2009. We have set a target date of 31 December 2012 for attainment of "Excellent" status under the Framework, which is in line with the programme for London's local authorities as set by Capital Ambition, London's Regional Improvement and Efficiency body.

Our Single Equality Scheme

Our Single Equality Scheme was produced as part of the process of incorporating the Equality Act 2010 into our work and policies. The Single Equality Scheme also incorporates our previous Corporate Equalities Plan, Race, Disability and Gender Equality Schemes into one Scheme.

The City of London published its first Corporate Equalities Plan in 2004, as part of its commitment to attaining various levels of the Equality Standard for Local Government. This set out what every Department intended to do to ensure that equal opportunity became a key part of the way we work and place equalities at the centre of policy making, service delivery and employment practice. This Plan evolved in response to feedback from residents, City workers and businesses, service users and other stakeholders. It has also developed as Departments progressed their initial plans and moved forward to new areas of work.

The Single Equality Scheme continues this work and feeds into local service planning, the Community Strategy ( The City Together Strategy: The Heart of a World Class City 2008-2014 ) and the City of London’s annual Business Planning cycle, aiming to ensure that services are relevant and represent all the communities served by the City of London. It also reflects both our stakeholders' and the government's desire that Equality Schemes focus on clear objectives that will improve equality outcomes.

As the City of London Corporation also acts as the Police Authority for the City, our Single Equality Scheme also incorporates the Single Equality Scheme of the Police Committee (Appendix F)
