Supported Housing

What is Supporting People?

The Supporting People (SP) programme was launched nationally in 2003 and is committed to providing a better quality of life for vulnerable people to live more independently and maintain their tenancies. The programme provides funding for housing related support to prevent problems that can often lead to hospitalisation, institutional care or homelessness, and can help the smooth transition to independent living for those leaving institutional environments.

What is housing related support?

The primary purpose of housing related support is to develop and sustain an individual’s capacity to live independently in their accommodation, eg enabling individuals to access their correct benefit entitlement; ensuring they have the correct skills to maintain a tenancy; advising on home improvements and accessing a community service alarm. Other services include a home visit for a short period each week or an on-site full-time support worker for a long period of time.

Supporting People in the City of London

The City of London provides support for about 300 vulnerable people, part funded through the SP programme. The Supported Housing team works with externally contracted organisations and staff in Community & Children's Services to provide housing related support to the following groups: single homeless (former rough sleepers); people with mental health problems; people with a physical or sensory disability; older people in sheltered accommodation. Support is provided through the following services:

  • Middle Street - single homeless (former rough sleeper) project. Managed by Providence Row Housing Association
  • Tudor Rose Court – sheltered accommodation for older people, managed by Stadium Housing Association
  • City of London Tenancy Sustainment Partnership - the City of London's in-house floating support service, providing housing related support to people in their home
  • Mais House, Isleden House and Harman Close – sheltered accommodation for older people, owned and managed by the City of London
  • City of London Almshouses - sheltered accommodation for older people.  Find out more about the Almshouses Trust
