Residents proposing to complete alterations in their properties
should contact the Barbican Estate Office and request a copy of The
Standard Conditions for Proposed Work & Alterations on the
Barbican Estate. This outlines the procedure residents should
follow in applying for Landlord’s Approval for alterations. It also

Asbestos information by block
The Standard Conditions for Proposed Work & Alterations on
the Barbican Estate includes a section regarding management of
asbestos in accordance with the current leglislation (see pages 15
to 16)
You are most at risk when you are:
- working in an unfamiliar site
- the building you are working on was built prior to 2000 (as was
the Barbican Estate)
- you do not know how to recognise and work safely with asbestos
in accordance with the current Asbestos Regulations which state
asbestos must, in most cases, be removed by a Licensed Asbestos
Removal Contractor.
The links below will provide further information regarding
the likely location of asbestos in the communal areas and interior
of flats in particular blocks on the Barbican Estate. However,
please note that asbestos containing materials may be found in
other areas of individual flats, although this does not mean that
in every situation there is an unacceptable risk. Residents are
advised to have their own Hazard Risk Assessment carried out.
