Fresh start - moving out of London

LAWN

The LAWN project is a choice-based scheme that aims to redress the traditional migration imbalance between the south east of England and the rest of the UK. It offers council and registered social landlord (RSL) tenants the chance to live in an area of their choice out of London. More than 70 social landlords in the Midlands and in the north of the UK have already agreed to make property available to families living in overcrowded homes or temporary housing in London.

LAWN has property available to help around 800 families and they offer help with practical advice about moving they can also explore training and employment possibilities.

Information on the type of housing on offer, facilities in the area and financial help available is given to families by the referring landlords. The receiving landlord offers support and helps families settle in and find schools and other services.

For those who move, the project offers a fresh start in a new home.

Homefinder Direct

Homefinder direct lets you apply for a home of your choice instead of waiting for an offer that someone else thinks is suitable All available Restormel Housing Trust, Devon & Cornwall Housing Association, and Sanctuary Housing Association homes in Restormel are advertised every fortnight in the Cornish Guardian and here on this website If there is more than one applicant for an advertised home, and they are in the same band, the one who has been registered longest will be successful
If you're already on the waiting list, you're automatically registered with Homefinder direct. If not, you'll need to fill in a simple form to register.

Seaside and Country Homes

If you are a tenant of a London Borough, the City of London Corporation, or a registered social landlord in London, you could be eligible for this scheme. (Registered social landlords include housing associations, housing trusts and housing co-ops).

You must be at least 60 years of age and capable of independent living.

If you fulfil these criteria, you may be able to move to selected coastal or country areas from Cornwall to Norfolk. There are also properties in the Midlands and Lincolnshire.

The Seaside and Country HOMES scheme has approximately 3,200 flats and bungalows (about 250 vacancies a year). All the bungalows have two bedrooms. The flats have either one or two bedrooms. The rents vary depending on many things, including size, location and services. Heating, water rates and council charges are generally not included in the rent.

Applicants are considered within a "points system":

  • You will be awarded points if you are currently living in an under-occupied home, or depending on what floor you live on and your health needs
  • Points are also awarded to reflect the housing needs of each London Borough and whether the property being vacated will help to house the Borough's homeless.
  • Applicants with the most points are likely to be rehoused most quickly; applicants with very low points total may be advised that they cannot be helped within the scheme. All applicants' details are thoroughly checked to ensure that accurate pointing is given.

Talk to your landlord if you need further information, or call Seaside and Country HOMES on 020 7963 0204.
