In line with national policy, the City SMP is keen to promote
best practice guidance to night clubs in relation to drug use in
the City of London and the immediate surrounding areas. As part
of its commitment, the City SMP has contributed to the
update of best practice published by the London Drug and
Alcohol Policy Forum. The updated version is titled Safer
Nightlife.
Its purpose is to help ensure the health and safety of everyone
involved in, and going out to, events in pubs and clubs with
particular emphasis on those who also take drugs. The document
provides dedicated advice on a range of key issues including:
creating a safe physical environment, tackling drug dealing,
reducing harm from drug use, promoting sexual health and developing
a drug policy.

The Substance Misuse Partnership in collaboration with the
London Drug and Alcohol Policy Forum has also produced the
supporting document Drugs at the Door. This provides guidance for
venues and staff on handling drugs with regards to the installation
and management of drug amnesty boxes.

Project Eclipse
The Substance Misuse Partnership (SMP) and the London Drug and
Alcohol Policy Forum have been working together on Project Eclipse
to take a closer look at the night time economy and substance
misuse within the Square Mile. The project aimed to reduce the harm
caused by drugs, allow individuals to dispose of drugs safely,
provide training to the staff of night time venues, deliver
training to the Police and also provide information about the type
and purity of drugs being used within the City.
As part of the project amnesty bins were provided to 11 night
time venues within the City so that patrons could dispose of any
substances in their possession before entry. The contents of the
bins were then analysed at St George’s hospital.
