Sudan dyes detected in spices


Palm oil The dyes Sudan I, Sudan II, Sudan III and Sudan IV have been detected in a number of foodstuffs, Sudan dyes are red dyes and their use in foods is not permitted. The EU has introduced control measures for imports of chilli, chilli products, curry powder, curcuma (turmeric) and palm oil (pictured right) from third countries (non-EU countries), consignments must be accompanied by a certificate showing that they have been tested and found to be free of Sudan dyes. If a certificate is not available, the consignment will be sampled and detained until the results of analysis confirms that Sudan dyes are not present. The cost of the analysis and detention shall be payable by the importer.
