Consultation on Dementia Services underway

NHS East London and the City (the cluster of primary care trusts that commission health services) have launched a consultation about changes to in-patient services for people with dementia: Older People, Modern Services: a consultation on improving in-patient assessment services for people with dementia in east London and the City.

In the last few years, there has been a focus on investing resources to support people with dementia to live in their own homes. In order to continue this support, the aim is to develop more services in the community to support people with dementia and their families at an earlier stage.

The proposals include bringing together the short stay dementia assessment wards based in The Larch in Hackney, The Green in Tower Hamlets and Ruby ward in Newham and having one central dementia assessment service on the Mile End Hospital site.

A public meeting for City residents will take place on Tuesday 18 October from 3pm-5pm in the Courtyard Room at the Bishopsgate Institute, 230 Bishopsgate, London EC2M 4QH.

Full details are on the local NHS website.

NHS summary care records to improve patient care

Patients in Hackney and the City will receive more efficient health-care services, sooner with the introduction of NHS summary care records.

The summary care record is a secure electronic record of patients’ vital health information that can be shared between health-care staff involved in that patient’s care, ensuring vital information is at hand during treatment.

The innovative scheme will give doctors and nurses access to information about patients’ allergies, medication and any bad reactions patients may have had to medication in the past. Summary care records greatly increase effective access to patient information and ensure that medical professionals have details of a patients’ essential medical history in the event of an emergency.

For more information, please phone the dedicated NHS Care Records Service information line on 0845 603 8510 or visit the website at www.nhscarerecords.nhs.uk/summary
