Recycling - practical tips


Reduce

  • reduce the volume of packaging you buy (eg by buying loose fruit and vegetables).
  • buy packaging that can be recycled.
  • buy quality products that last longer.
  • stop junk mail before it reaches your mail box by registering with the Mailing Preference Service , Freepost 22, London W1E 7EZ. Tel 0845 703 4599.
  • store emails on your PC rather than printing them out. The reverse side of printed sheets can be used as a notepad.

Re-use

  • don't throw away unwanted gifts or clothes - donate them to charity.

  • try to repair broken goods before you throw them away.
  • re-use shopping bags as bin liners, and old clothes for cleaning cloths.
  • use empty tins, jars and cartons for storage, crafts etc.

Recycle

  • Christmas cards
  • paper, cardboard, junk mail, glass, fridges and freezers, mobile phones can all be recycled easily.
  • details of recycling sites in the City will be available here soon.
  • obsolete mobile phones , with SIM cards removed, are now accepted by numerous mobile phone retailers.
  • fridges / freezers
  • the City Corporation will collect unwanted fridges / freezers from City residents and businesses.
