Making a Corporate Commitment - water consumption

Total water consumption in 2002 / 02 was 416,043 m3 - a reduction of 13.5%.
Total water consumption in 2000 / 01 was 401,477 m3 - a reduction of 17%.

Water consumption is still ahead of target; however consumption has increased over last year’s MACC2 update as a result of a detected leak at one of our open spaces sites.

The City of London has already exceeded its 2007/08 target. Most of the savings have been made at two sites - the Barbican Centre and Billingsgate market. Measures at the Barbican have included the installation of waterless urinals in the public toilets, and decommissioning the cooling towers as the air-conditioning system has been replaced by chilled water supplied from the Citigen CHP system. The decommissioning of the cooling towers alone accounted for around 10% of the water used at this site.

At Billingsgate, water consumption has been reduced by a new system for the daily 'wash down'. Large water hoses were previously used to wash the market area - an activity which has now ceased and been replaced in all areas of the market by specialist cleaning vehicles using far less water.Together these water saving activities for the two sites alone have saved over 80,000 m3 of water per year. Water is still a primary concern of the City of London and we will continue to monitor and determine areas for improvement.
