'Middlessex Green' is a community project for the
residents of Middlesex Street Estate. It gives the residents
an opportunity to save money, become healthier and be even more
environmentally friendly, at the same time as getting to know their
neighbours better, and exploring unique places that are right on
their doorstep.
There are lots of activities and events that have sprouted
from ideas within the Middlesex Street community - even the name
was a resident's idea!
- Home energy assessments
- New cycle parking
- Cookery lessons
- Community cookbook
- Guided City walk
- Visit to a local community food growing
project
- Recycling Christmas craft workshop
- Give and take day

Home energy assessments
Until February 2011
The City of London has joined forces with the charity
Waste
Watch to offer home energy assessments to the
Middlesex Street Estate residents. The aim of the assessment is to
see what simple steps residents can take to save money on their
energy bills and help the environment. With winter coming now is a
good time to start thinking about reducing energy bills.
Additionally, Waste Watch are looking for Community Champions
from Middlesex Street Estate to help lead the project. If you are
interested in learning new skills and receiving free energy-saving
equipment or just want to know more about this specific scheme.
Please
email jonathan.hazell@wastewatch.org.uk
or call 020 7549 0343 for more information about the energy
assessments. Leaflets that explain more about the energy-saving
project will be posted through doors soon.
New cycle parking
Spring 2011
The installation of new cycle parking facilities on the estate
is underway. The location for the bicycle parking was decided with
help from residents who attended the Estate Summer
Party. People chose the location based on ease of
accessibility, security and available space.
If you would like to voice your opinion on the cycle parking, or
have any suggestions, please emails us at
sustainability@cityoflondon.gov.uk
or phone us on 020 7332 1428 for an informal chat.

New Year Give and Take Day
Saturday 8 January 2011
After Christmas we'll be giving you the opportunity to swap your
unwanted Christmas items, or items you no longer need in the New
Year, so things that you do. Bring along electrical items and
clothing and swap that doughnut maker for a new jacket, or that
dress you never wear for a new hairdryer.
Christmas craft session
Saturday 11 December 2010
Craft is in fashion, so we're working with the City of
London's Recycling Team for some wonderful craft ideas that
incorporate reusing and recycling ordinary objects and make them
into something extraordinary. The session is appropriate for adults
and children alike.
Community cookbook
Published in December 2010
Recipes from the residents of Middlesex Street Estate have been
published in a beautiful cookbook before Christmas. Through the
community cookbook residents are able to find out more about what
people in their local community like to cook, giving them a greater
variety of recipes to use themselves. The cookbook also
includes information about where to buy local food, as well as how
to think about reducing food waste and lots of other useful
tips.
Waste Watch Energy Challenge workshops
Thursday 4 and 11 November
The Middlesex Street Estate Energy Challenge challenges
residents to cut their electricity use by 20% with the help of the
free loan of an electricity monitor and goody bag for two
weeks, alongside advice and support. Learn how you could save
£90-£140 per year on your bills. Waste Watch are already running a
similar sucessful scheme on Mansell Street Estate, where one
resident identified how to cut his projected monthly electricity
bill from over £40 to around £20.
Please email
jonathon.hazell@wastewatch.org.uk
or phone him on 020 7549 0343 for more information.
Cookery class
Friday 5 November 2010
Sarah, your cook for the evening, will showed residents
how cooking can be simple and fun. The Ballroom Dancing
class tasted the results and was delighted.
Sarah challenged our perception of the cauliflower with
her spicy cauliflower fritters, showed us how to make a hearty
winter soup with fresh local and seasonal vegetables, as well as
quick and tasty stuffed savoury jacket potatoes. You can see
Sarah's work on her website or read her
blog.
Guided 'Sights and Sounds' City walk
24 September 2010
Two residents on Middlesex Street Estate used their
skills as Official City Guides to lead people on a 'Sights and
Sounds' walk in the City. After the walk, there was be tea and
coffee available in the estate community
centre. Residents from other estates also joined the group
walk.
Food and Fun Fair
Saturday 11 September 2010
Residents at the Golden Lane Estate and Fortune
Street Gardens, in the City of London, opened their community
food growing projects to be viewed by the residents of

when they work together.
