We are proud to announce that the City of London are an
accredited Fairtrade Zone, and have continued to be awarded
Fairtrade Status for the Square Mile since 22 October
2007.
The Fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label which appears
on around 2,500 products as an independent guarantee that
disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a
better deal. There are an estimated one million farmers and workers
directly involved in Fairtrade and millions more benefit indirectly
from the extra money it brings to their community.
What Fairtrade Status means
In gaining Fairtrade accreditation the City met five criteria
laid out by the
Fairtrade Foundation, these are
- The local authority passes a resolution supporting
Fairtrade.
- A range of Fairtrade products are readily available in the
area’s shops and served in local cafés
- Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places
and community organisations
- Media coverage and popular support for the campaign has been
sought
- A local Fairtrade steering group has been established to ensure
continued commitment to Fairtrade status.
The City's Fairtrade Resolution
On Thursday 7 December 2006, The City of London Corporation
formally adopted a new resolution in support of purchasing products
bearing the Fairtrade mark and encouraging our stakeholders to do
the same.
