Adapting to climate change

City skyline at sunsetClimate change is real, it is happening now, and its impacts will affect all of us over the decades to come. Whilst it is essential to continue to cut greenhouse gas emissions, it is also vital that we prepare our society and economy for life in a warming world. How ready is your business?

Current predictions from the UK Climate Impact Programme are for –

  • Hotter, drier summers
  • Milder, wetter winters
  • More frequent extreme high temperatures
  • More frequent heavy downpours of rain, more flash floods
  • Significant decreases in soil moisture content in summer
  • Sea level rise and increases in storm surge height
  • Possible higher wind speeds.

How will these expected changes affect your day to day operations ?
What effect will these factors have on your investment decisions?
Will climatic changes affect the comfort of your employees and customers?
Will your premises or infrastructure be affected?

Some impacts will be felt across all business sectors, such as the potential for disruption to transport networks. We are all aware of the threat to London of the possible future failure of the Thames Barrier. Specific sectors may also see their markets changing, with new opportunities emerging as well as threats to traditional markets.

The City of London Corporation was the first UK Local Authority to produce a climate change adaptation strategy.

On 24 February 2010, the  2 degrees network hosted an online conference comparing the City of London's and New York's approach to adaptation. A recording of the discussion is available online. (Note: registration required to view the information on the 2 degrees network's website)
