Increasing educational attainment in City fringe schools

Teach First Participant Lesha Small works with pupils during a Maths workshop. The TeachFirst Ambassadors Programme is currently part-funded by the City of London. Supporting young people in the City fringes to improve their achievement during their education is an essential part of the City of London Corporation’s aspiration to improve skill levels and enable greater numbers of local people to access employment within the City.

The City fringes face some considerable challenges in this area:

  • In England, 49.8% of pupils achieved 5 or more grades A*-C including English and maths GCSEs in 2009.  In the same year, an average of 50.1% of pupils in the City fringes achieved the same.  http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/performancetables/
  • 19.4% of secondary school pupils in City fringes have special educational needs, compared to 12.4% of secondary school students in England.  http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/performancetables/

The City of London Corporation is, therefore, committed to working with educational bodies in neighbouring boroughs, including Local Education Authorities, Education Business Partnerships and charities to increase academic attainment by secondary school pupils the City Fringe area.
