The City of London is committed to promoting Corporate
Responsibility. The Square Mile is arguably the UK’s most
prestigious and dynamic area, yet it is surrounded by some of the
most deprived neighbourhoods in the country.
The City Corporation works closely with public, private and
community sector bodies to ensure that the City and the City fringe
boroughs are inclusive and thriving places to be.
View a brochure of the free support
programmes (1416k) we provide for businesses looking to
engage with their local communities.
This responsibility is fulfilled through involvement in a number
of initiatives including:
-
Heart of the City - a free support programme for businesses in
the City and City fringes that are interested in developing a
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.
-
City Action for Community Development - a free employee
volunteering broker service for City-based businesses.
-
Sustainable procurement for City businesses - a free
advice service to City-based businesses looking to adopt a local
purchasing strategy.
-
The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards - an awards programme for
businesses and public bodies in Greater London with exemplary
Corporate Community Involvement activities.
-
Employee Volunteering Programme - a programme for the City
Corporation which offers all employees two working days per year to
volunteer with community groups in the City and its neighbouring
boroughs.
-
Partnerships - as part of a broader programme contributing to
the economic regeneration of the City fringes, the Partnerships
team assists City businesses looking to engage young people through
introducing them to City-type careers; and works with City
businesses to maximise access to employment opportunities for City
fringe residents.
In addition to the community engagement programmes listed above,
the City of London Corporation runs other initiatives to support
businesses in adopting environmentally and socially sustainable
work practices. Please see our
business sustainability page for more details.
Supporting Society
The Coalition Government has clearly set out what they expect
businesses to do to help build a big society under the
‘Every Business Commits’ agenda. For many
years, the City of London Corporation has run various programmes
that we believe meet these priorities, as set out above across
social, economic and environmental sustainability.
We also have specific programmes that can help businesses meet
the five priorities that the Government has asked every business to
take.

City of London’s response to the Big Society and how our
programmes can help businesses meet the ‘Every Business Commits’
vision.
London's Social Needs
A
report published by the Young Foundation
describes the social needs within London, in comparison to the
rest of the UK.
The London Map of Deprivation (351k)
illustrates that some of the most deprived boroughs in the
country are located right on the doorstep of the City.
The Deprivation Index measures the deprivation level for every
ward and local authority area in England. It combines a number of
indicators which cover a range of domains (Income, Employment,
Health Deprivation and Disability, Education, Skills and Training,
Housing and Geographical Access to Services) into a single
deprivation score for each area.
