Protected Views

Views of St Paul's Cathedral, the Monument, the Tower of London and other landmarks on the City skyline are protected by planning controls.

The Local Development Framework's Core Strategy includes Policy CS13 on protected views.  The protected views are shown on Proposals Map A (7.2mb)

The City Corporation adopted a Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) on Protected Views in January 2012.  The SPD explains the locally protected views in more detail.

Supporting documents are available explaining how this SPD was prepared.

This SPD replaces the former Supplementary Planning Guidance 'St Paul's & Monument Views',  adopted in 2002.

The locally protected views of the Cathedral are known as the 'St Paul's Heights'.  These take the form of a grid of maximum building heights.  Extracts of the grid for any location are available at charge of £25.

The Mayor's London View Management Framework protects important views across London.  These include various views of the City skyline including St Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London and river prospects.

Views that are protected by geometrical height limits are shown on the interactive City map.
