Hampstead Heath management and consultation

Hampstead Heath Management Plan Part I – Towards a Plan for the Heath

Towards a Plan for the Heath is the first step in a three-stage process, which will form a new management plan for Hampstead Heath. The plan will create a long-term vision for the Heath and will be an important tool for the City of London in successfully managing the Heath for the next 10-plus years.

The City of London produced the draft plan for the Heath with the help of representatives of some of the local interest groups on the Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee. Working with specialists The Environment Council and Resources for Change it subsequently sought the views of the wider community on the vision and objectives, which make up Towards a Plan for the Heath during a three-month consultation period, which ended on 20 May 2007. There was a range of opportunities for local people to share their vision and aspirations for the Heath, including online and paper-based surveys, consultation stalls, discussion groups and door-to-door surveys. In the light of this consultation period the City of London made changes to the draft plan.

Ongoing consultation

The City of London sees consultation as a vital part of effective management of the Heath, working closely with local organisations which are represented on the Heath's Management and Consultative Committees, and meeting regularly with the Heath and Hampstead Society and English Heritage.

Ongoing dialogue with Heath users has reinforced the message that people value the Heath and want it maintained broadly as it is. The interim management plan reflects this and outlines how active management is essential to maintain and enhance the nature conservation, landscape and amenity interest of Hampstead Heath.
