Coulsdon Common

View of chalk grassland on Coulsdon Common

Coulsdon Common, owned and managed by the City of London at no cost to the public, is a 51 hectare (127 acre) public open space. Located in south Croydon it forms part of a larger area of open countryside within the London green belt that link London with the wider countryside of Surrey.

Coulsdon Common lies in the North Downs Natural Area and virtually all of it is a Site of Nature Conservation Importance (Site of Metropolitan Interest) for its chalk grassland and wood pasture habitats.  This mosaic of open grassland, scrub and woodland contributes to an attractive landscape despite the close proximity of busy roads and residential housing.

Rangers, contractors and volunteers manage the site so that local people and visitors from further away can enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside just a stone’s throw from London.
